Gaze

May 22, 2007

Soho is a place where gazes would sparks out in any moment.

They might be two seconds, or just half a second; some were strong, some were mild.

There are gazes that you would like to ignore, and some that would make you feel excited.

They are short and intense, and within those seconds, so much could have been said and explored, and yet there are still so much to find out.

Though, you don’t want to make them obvious.

Between avoiding and checking out, gazes would meet unintentionally, that makes the whole situation even more exciting……

Big place, small place

May 22, 2007

When I first came to
London,

I thought it was a really big place.

But then I found out it is much smaller than I thought it was.

After I left her

I kept bumping into her.

Maybe she does as well,

just that she never said hi to me.

Sometimes

when I saw her

I would secretly film her, capture her moments,

by my mobile, my camera, or whatever I had in hands.

From her movement,

her smile

or all the other little expressions,

I could see whether she was happy, or sad.

A Video Letter

May 22, 2007

I knew that I wouldn’t have the courage to meet up with her

or give her a phone call.

So I wanted to write her a letter.

I wanted to know how her life is.

I had written a lot,

and thought about it line by line,

kept thinking how she would think when she read them.

At the end,

I didn’t send out a single letter.

I sent her a video,

which I edited the footages that I had filmed on her.

I think

she would know that I was asking:

“How are you?”

“Are you happy?”

Time: 2001, when man started his affair with PatrickMan, 19;  Woman, 24

W:  How much was the stuff you bought me from
Hong Kong?

M:  Patrick gave me the money already.

EXTRACT ONE — MAN + WOMAN

May 22, 2007

Time: 1997
Man, 17;Woman, 22
(On the train/ in a café)
It doesn’t matter!  For all the girlfriends I had I wouldn’t say they’re all very pretty, personality is more important.

W:  Excuse me!  You are seventeen and you say that? …you are awesome……kids are like that nowadays.

M:  You think I’m a kid?

W:  Yes, you are a kid; you’re younger than my brother.

M:  Age is just a number; it’s the maturity that counts.

W:  oh… I’m so behind in these kind of conversational skills……I’m old!

M:  No, you look young, and beautiful!

W:  I’m not.

M:  You are

W:  What a sweet mouth! You are good at this aren’t you? You’ve got the world pal!

M:  I’m just telling the truth.

W:  So I think I should say thank you!

M:  You’re welcome

Work in Progress

May 22, 2007

We are finally starting to workshop our script in earnest.  The performers are generating material that is really evocative and emotionally charged stuff.  Some of it is posted above.  Any thoughts?

A Home at Last

May 18, 2007

We’ve been looking for a space for ages and nothing seemed to fit.  An installation needs space and time and we could find two that went together, but thanks to some production team magic we have.

A sigh of relief.

1997 Celebrations

May 10, 2007

We found this during our historical research.  It’s celebrations from Beijing of the Hong Kong handover in 1997.

Storyboarding

May 8, 2007

We are trying to learn to storyboard. It’s a handy skill but something none of us are practiced at. I wish I had found this storyboarding crash course from the University of Hawaii or these tips from Exposure weeks ago.

The Handover
